Valencia were able to salvage a point mainly thanks to a good performance from their goalkeeper in what was Gary Neville’s first league match as manager.

Eibar are a modest outfit, but they attacked well against a side who seemed to be lacking in spirit, who have not found their feet so far this season and are still seeking an identity. Only the heroics of Jaume Domènech and a lucky own goal from Juncà saved Valencia from defeat.

The Basques pride themselves on coming out all guns blazing at Ipurua, where they are a force to be reckoned with, putting the pressure on and not letting the away team play comfortably. So it proved on Sunday afternoon, with the hosts flying out of the traps, Keko and Ander Capa wreaking havoc up the right while Sergi Enrich and Borja caused problems through the middle.

Jaume had to be on his toes early on to stem the home attack, producing the first of several top stops. Enrich shot in the penalty area, and was about to wheel away and celebrate when, magically, out shot the goalie’s hand and turned the ball on to the post.

The visitors may have snatched a point in the end at a tough place to play, but the display was still not good enough for a Valencia team which could give a lot more.
