FIFA World Cup Concerns After Rio de Janeiro Building Collapse

FIFA World Cup concerns have been raised about the two buildings collapsed in downtown Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday – as Brazil organizes to host soccer World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics Games.
The site in central Rio de Janeiro after a multi-storey building collapsed. It is not known how many people might have been died in the collapse, as the latest incident failure of authorities to improve the city’s infrastructure amid preparations to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
A loud explosion headed the collapse, which left the surrounding area enclosed in dust, eye witnesses told. Rescue troops pulled four people alive from the wreckage, with no dead bodies found by midnight, City Mayor Eduardo Paes admitted the sources.
More than 11 people could be caught in the debris, cable broadcaster Gloominess told. City authorities are evaluating the risk of collapse of a damaged adjoining building. TV pictures showed cars covered with concrete and steel rods. Light, the electricity distribution company serving the city, cut power to the area to prevent the risk of fires after a strong smell of gas was detected.
Rio de Janeiro is thrashing to address concerns over poor infrastructure as it prepares to co-host the soccer World Cup in 2014.The incident comes months, after a blast apparently caused by a gas leak ripped through a restaurant in downtown Rio, killing 3 people and igniting concerns over the state of the city’s infrastructure.
At Rio high-rises collapsed buildings, which reside a bakery and an Itau Univac Holding Bank branch, were near the headquarters of state-controlled companies that includes Oil Producer Petrograd and Development Bank – BODES.
