Ex-Captain of Atalanta – Cristiano Doni Arrested For Match-Fixing

Cristiano Doni, the Former Captain of Atalanta team stated that he bet on fixed soccer games in Series B in Italy relating to his club. He says that he agreed to go together with the scam as his team was not supposed to lose.
According to the reports, in Italy Doni was among the 16 people, who were arrested across an investigation into match-fixing and unlawful betting on games. After 5 days of solitary confinement, the Former Captain was allowed to meet with his Advocate and was then inquired by prosecutors.
Cristiano Doni says, Yes, I knew regarding the fix for Atalanta-Piacenza. He gave his approval and he bet. He states that he as well tried to do the same thing for the match with Ascoli. However they were all personal initiatives; He says that he is not part of any organization and the club didn’t know anything.
As part of the initial wave of the inquiry, 16 people were arrested in June and Doni was after that placed under investigation. At that point of time, he stated that he was innocent, although in August he was banned from soccer for 3½ years by the Italian soccer federation.
Doni aggress he’s mistake and assert that he can’t even look at himself in the mirror as it makes him think about all the pain he has caused to his family and the fans.
Others arrested in the match fixing include Luigi Sartor (former Inter Milan and Roma player), former Series B player Alessandro Zamperini and active players Filippo Carobbio of Spezia and Carlo Gervasoni of Piacenza.
