Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has signed a new four-year contract on Monday, which will keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2014/15.
Cleverley (22-year-old) broke into United’s first team at the start of English Premier League champion’s season and earned a maiden call-up to the England squad, but has been sidelined in recent weeks with an ankle injury.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted on the club’s official website: “Tom is one of the brightest prospects in the English game. For a young boy, he has a good foot-balling brain which, when coupled with his energy and talent, makes for a player with a fine future ahead of him.”
Sir Alex added: “It’s the Man Utd. way to encourage our young key players to make their mark in the first team and Tom has grabbed that chance with both hands.” The midfielder, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury, added: “It is been a fantastic start to the season for me, breaking into the first team and getting an England draft. We have a team with great ability and I cannot wait to get started again.”
Cleverley, who spent last season on loan at English Premier League team Wigan, has been touted by some as a lasting replacement at United for the lately retired Paul Scholes. In Scholes’ absence, Cleverley is rivaling with Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Brazil international Anderson for a place in United’s central midfield.
Last season Manchester United won their 19th English trophy.
