Lionel Messi has won the inaugural UEFA Best Player in Europe award on Thursday for the 2010-11 seasons. Messi finished ahead of Barcelona team mates Xavi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Argentina forward Messi scored 53 goals in last season, as he and Xavi led Barcelona to the Champions League and Spanish triumphs. A panel of 53 journalists drawn from each of UEFA’s member nations voted ahead of the draw for this season’s Champions’ League group stage.
Messi has finished as top scorer for the third successive season. Messi’s last European goal of the season was the second in Barcelona’s 3-1 final win over Manchester United in May and he also helped his club to a third straight La Liga title. He was already honored with the Footballer of the year.
The 24-year-old, Argentina forward Messi said that he will Keeping all these awards at home and he still have some space for more. He took the opportunity to thank to his team mates for helping him achieve this award. UEFA created the honour after France Football magazine combined its traditional European award with FIFA’s world player prize. Messi won that award in January when Xavi placed third.
Barcelona will face Europa League winners Porto in the European Super Cup on Friday.
