Carling Cup friendly matches between England and Netherlands at Wembley stadium on Wednesday night has been called off as a result of the rioting in London.
The first round Carling Cup matches at Charlton, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Bristol City have also been postponed, with Charlton vs. Reading and West Ham United vs. Aldershot Town to be rescheduled as violence spreads across England’s capital city.
But in Birmingham City, the third Test series between England and India at Edgbaston on Wednesday is likely to go ahead as planned, despite trouble in the capital city.
A statement from the club’s official web states: The club were contacted this evening and admits that all major events in London were to be rescheduled because of the need to focus police resources in another place.
Sources Revealed: A Police spokesperson had told on Monday night, every football game in London City is subject to assessment around police resources.
Police were concerned Wembley might become a possible flash point for rioters and burglars, and with police resources already expanded, it was decided that officers who were set for duty at the match should be arranged elsewhere.
Tottenham Hotspur’s opening game of the English Premier League season at home to Everton this weekend was as of Tuesday morning still arranged to go ahead, but might be in doubt should the riots continue.
No date has so far been set for the rescheduled match, but the club will be in contact with the Aldershot and Football League.
