The 2011 European Under-21 Championships get underway in Denmark on June 11 and there are high hopes that England can go one better than their 2009 final defeat to Germany and win this year’s competition.
Stuart Pearce’s England squad are hopeful of winning the 2011 European Under-21 Championships in Denmark later this month but they face stiff competition from the talented youngsters from Spain.
The England squad is in a strong form, with key players such as Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson, Jack Rodwell and Swansea playoff champion Scott Sinclair likely to schedule for their country’s opening match in Group A, against Spain.
The Spaniards seems as the biggest threat to the English squad, with household names such as Jeffren Suarez, Bojan Krkic and Juan Mata with a head coach Luis Milla in his side to travel to Denmark later this month.
Manchester United fans will be keeping a keen eye on Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, who is rumored to be making a £20 million deal to Old Trafford in the summer as the lasting replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar.
England and Spain may qualify from Group A. However, the group is an extremely tough one with Czech Republic and Ukraine both qualifying with some way. The Czechs managed an easy 5-0 aggregate victory against Greece in their playoff match, while Ukraine likely of a Dutch side that many would have anticipated to be one of the favorites to win this year’s tournament.
Group B looks weaker with Belarus and Iceland expected to struggle against tournament hosts Denmark and a hard looking Switzerland team. Unfortunately, neither the Swiss nor the Danes would be unreal against any of the Group A teams.
With so many talented young players for this competition, the Euro 2011 Championships will surely be a delight for football fans this summer.
