Cristiano Ronaldo seals the champion in extra time as Real Madrid edge out Copa del Rey trophy lack with a 1-0 victory against biggest rivals FC Barcelona on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid were crowned Copa del Rey champions for the 18th time after defeating FC Barcelona in the second El Clasico in four days to win under Jose Mourinho led the Capital side to their first trophy since 2008.

Both sides made good encouraging starts with a vigorous atmosphere at the Mestella stadium.

Real Madrid made the better start to the game and could have taken the lead. When Mesut played the ball to Madrid key player Ronaldo, whose first touch to the ball was not that best and with his shot was being blocked by Javier Mascherano.

Their lot of efforts got heated between the two teams, following an incident between Alvaro Arbeloa and David Villa involved in a brief pushing game as the atmosphere in Valencia continued to be much lively. But, a first half came to an end with the game remaining goalless.

Barcelona made a brighter start to the second half, but Iker Casillas was still having an easy night in the Real Madrid goal. With the 90 minutes up, with Madrid on top in the opening period and Barca better after the break.

The game remained goalless and extra-time was to follow. Pep Guardiola and Mourinho’s men were pushed key players forward in the extra-time in search of the goal needed to take the game to a penalty shootout.

Messi had a late chance to equalize, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s tremendous header in the first period of extra-time went close to making it 2-0.

Real Madrid held on to seal a fantastic victory and end a spell of almost three years without a trophy.
