The two-time World Cup winners, Argentina were held to a scoreless draw by a fierce Costa Rica in an exciting fixture. The International Friendly match was held on 30th March 2011 at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, Costa Rica.
Argentina was hoping to rebound with victory against Costa Rica on Tuesday night. But, they were undone with their efforts. Lionel Messi was sidelined with a leg injury, and with numerous others on the bench in an international friendly at the Ticos’ new national stadium.
Argentina coach Sergio Batista stated that, the Barcelona star had a minor leg injury to his right leg leaving him out of lineup in this match, after saying he planned to play. Defender Gabriel Milito and Midfielder Javier Mascherano were the only regular starters among the first 11 in the squad.
Sergio Batista also rested most of his other top key players, leaving Javier Zanetti and Angel Di Maria on the bench, but will be bitter with the result in front of a hostile environment in San Jose.
Costa Rica head coach Ricardo Lavolpe side hung tough defensively for the opening 15 minute, playing physically while barely giving the Argentines room to advance with the ball.
Neither team showed much of anything in the first half ‘nor’ in the second half game. Argentina had most of the control, but failed to make scoring pressure, with Costa Rica trying to take plus point on the counter-attack.
Both played dreadful, ill-timed passes out of limits and failed to find the vital passes to send the forwards through.
Argentina drew 1-1 score on Saturday over the United States in an International friendly match at East Rutherford, New Jersey.
