Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has disclosed that injury plagued defender Rio Ferdinand may be out for the rest of the season. Ferguson is troubling with an ongoing calf problem and uncertain future.

Rio Ferdinand, (32 year-old) has been fighting with a back complaint right through the Premier League battle.  But his calf injury has picked up in the warm up on 5th February, earlier to the loss at Wolves (1-2) has meant and he has been unable to help Manchester United in their chase for the treble.

The England captain was expected to be back in action within three weeks, but is no nearer making his return six weeks on with Fergie giving way.

United boss Ferguson stated that, Rio Ferdinand has been out of games for a few weeks now and we are not looking at this as a short time position. However, he has not yet started his training and we will be lucky to get him back for some part of the season. If he is not well in a timely manner, then he may not play again this season.

The loss of such a qualified key player will come as a huge blow to Manchester United. As they battle on in the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup with a critically rearguard.

Rio has played in just twenty of Man United’s 45 games this season so far, but a string of fitness and injuries have cast doubt over whether the £29 million defender will ever get back to his best side.

Ferdinand began to undergo from an unbearable back problem all through the Club World Cup in Japan in 2008, with the situation forcing him to miss three months of the 2009/10 season.

United full-back Rafael is ruled out for at least two weeks with a similar problem and the versatile defender John has been out for five weeks with the hamstring injury, he picked up injury over Marseille in midweek.

Skipper Nemanja Vidic will miss this weekend’s English Premier League game at home to Bolton with a calf injury. But United’s manager Ferguson hopes centre back J Evans will be fit after resuming training this week.
