Qatar won the right to host the FIFA 2022 World Cup settled in the month of summer. The World Cup is traditionally held in June-July and there were talks of a winter World Cup. But, Qatar has said that they will come up with a technology to air-condition stadiums.
Qatar has become the first Arab country to host the FIFA World Cup. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, son of the present Emir of Qatar, was the chairman of the bid committee.
Qatar planned to promote the bid as an Arab unity bid and was arranging this as an opportunity to conduit the gap between the Arab and Western worlds.
FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter has given the strongest suggestion that the FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup will be held in the summer, not the winter. Blatter earlier confirmed that he expected the finals to be dramatic in January because of the country’s climate.
However, the tournament usually takes place in June and July but temperatures in Qatar in those months can top 40C. He explained that a delegation from Qatar had visited Fifa headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, and indicated that the World Cup would be played in the summer months.
Blatter told the BBC: “I think for the time being the matter is on ice. Everything is settled for summer and all the 64 matches will be played in the territory of Qatar.”
He added: “In the bidding documents it was clearly established that the executive committee reserved the right to change anything in the bidding process, but here in this case it must come from Qatar.”
“The World Cup will be held in June-July when conditions will be hot in Qatar. But we still have 11 years to go and I’m sure they will find some solutions by then. They are talking about air-conditioning technology. So, they will come up with solutions,” Boris Becker, an avid football fan, said on the sidelines of the Laureus World Sports Awards on Sunday.
