Tottenham Hotspur had an extraordinary bid for Sergio Aguero of £38millon (45m euros) rejected by Atletico Madrid. The offered fee meets the striker’s buyout clause but that does not oblige the Spanish club to sell and their president Enrique Cerezo said last night that the Argentina international striker will not be leaving.
Sergio Aguero (22-year-old) is the son-in-law of Diego Maradona and has been the subject of strong interest from Chelsea. The club’s majority shareholder Miguel Angel Gil claimed only last week that Chelsea had a £52millon bid rejected for Aguero plus Atletico’s Uruguayan defender Diego Godin.
The offer would have smashed Tottenham’s record transfer of £16.5m for Luka Modric in 2009 but underlines president does trigger his release clause but taxes mean the player would have to pay much more than that figures to buy himself out.
“It is unthinkable that Kun [Aguero's nickname] can go,” Cerezo said.
“Players play where they want to play, and Kun and Diego Forlan want to play at Atletico Madrid.
”Offers, we have no offers, and we are not a selling club, we want to continue with these players that serve us well.”
Fernando Torres expected to move to Chelsea in a £50million deal today. The Spaniard’s attorney went to England yesterday to handle a new contract for Torres.
While Aguero has also drawn inquiries from Chelsea and Real Madrid in the current transfer window, Atletico have consistently refused to sanction a sale.
