Barcelona clinches a record-equaling 15th consecutive Spanish league win as the champions, the 50-year-old Spanish record set by Real Madrid. Lionel Messi struck twice to Barcelona at the top, as the champions moved seven points clear of Real Madrid.
Lionel Messi scored two goals in a three-minute span, as Barcelona had only one defeat in the La Liga this season and beat Hercules 3-0 on Saturday night. The two-time FIFA player of the year scored in the 87th and 89th minutes, raising his season total to 37 goals, including 21 in the league.
Barcelona continues through the fabulous season with a single loss so far and has scored a lot of goals in Spanish league games, which puts them currently at the first spot of the Champions League table.
Currently, Barcelona are taking the 1st spot, picking up 58 points from their 21 matches, holding a record of 19 wins, 1 draws, and 1 defeats, scoring 67 and 11 goals against in those games. Barcelona opened a seven-point lead over second-place Real Madrid, which plays at Osasuna on Sunday.
“It is a tremendous honour to win 15 consecutive league games and equal the record of (Alfredo) di Stefano’s Real Madrid side,” Pep Guardiola said. “I am sure that some team will beat the record but nobody has managed to do it in 50 years. We are proud. If 50 years have passed, it shows how difficult it is.”
Real Madrid won 15 straight matches during the 1960-61, which was captained by Alfredo di Stefano. But now, Barcelona can claim a record 16th win in a row if they beat Atletico Madrid at home next weekend.
